With A Stroke Of Paint !

Summer is officially here and that means its time to party! I'm joining the other creative ladies for the summer kick-off party this week starting with Debbiedoo's summer paint projects.

Thanks to this awesome party, all the projects that I've been putting off forever is finally getting done!!!
I love tole painting, it's my way of relaxing and I feel it is so therapeutic. I took tole painting classes before my blogging days. My attempt at tole painting:

I painted the chair green, distressed it a little to expose the wood, applied the detailing on top and finished it off with a sealer:

What do you think? Does it look too green? Paint is so forgiving...if I'm not happy with the end result I can always slap on another color! Maybe I should paint the whole thing in white..

Next, comes this metal plant stand. It was a little rusty around the edges. So, I went to work and painted the whole thing in Rust-Oleum Black in a gloss finish:

I love using galvanized buckets and pails as planters. Well, this one has served me well in the past few years looking gorgeous every summer all decked in pink annuals. But it has taken quite a beating over the years as well.
Looking quite forlorn in this sorry state:

After sanding it down with a medium grain sand paper and thoroughly scrubbing it down, I applied couple coats of Kilz primer.
Looking better already, don't you think?

Applied a coat of Rust-Oleum White:
Well, it looked too white to me! So I toned it down a wee bit by applying an antiquing medium to it. So this is how it looks now:

Now its time for the fun part. I have to make her look all pretty for this week's party. I decoupaged these beautiful images from The Graphics Fairy and after couple coats of Mod Podge I sealed  the entire thing with a protective finish.

I decoupaged the same image onto a burlap swatch and made it into a tag for the pail:

Now, she is all ready to party with the others:

I hope you liked my painted projects and thanks for stopping  by and taking a peek at them and for your lovely comments. Do stop by and visit so many other wonderful friends and be inspired by their creativity.

  33. Hello Kimberly(Labate),thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you read this, cause I couldn't find your email id or any other contact info. If you read this and if you have a blog or email id, then do let me know. To answer your question: After painting and applying the antiquing medium, I finished the chair off by applying 2 coats of satin finish polyurethane. I do not intend to keep it outside... prolonged exposure to outside elements will ruin it. I hope you read my reply and thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your compliment!

  41. Hey Poppy! I'm at a loss for words - everyone before me has said it all already. Everything is just beautiful! The green chair reminds me of the one my grandma used at the breakfast table. Hers was a windsor, tho', always painted green. I have a couple buckets that need some help - thanks for this great idea!

  42. Beautiful!
    I have a question, though...
Did you have to put the poem on velum or tissue so that the rose would show through?
    Thanks for a beautiful post...

  43. I have the same question as Anonymous?? I've never decoupaged before but have a bottle on my craft table. I just finished painting small wood serving tray this morning. I was at Graphic Fairy's sight looking for that perfect graphic.. Yours just jumped off the page.

So did you have to put the poem or the rose on any special paper? Please Please share more.. Your just so talented!!

  44. Hi Diana, thank you so much for stopping by. I hope you get this message cause I can't find your email id or any other contact info. If you have a blog then do let me know so that I can visit you.

To answer your question: The poem graphic and the red rose graphic are two separate graphics from our favorite "Fairy"... both the images I saved it in my computer.

After that you have to do some photo editing either in Microsoft Word or Picnik. Mine was done in Microsoft Word

Open Microsoft Word. Insert the poem graphic first since it is larger than the rose graphic.

Next insert the rose graphic on top of the poem graphic. At this point after superimposing both the images you can play around and resize your image according to the size of your project.

Microsoft Word will let you fade the first image as well by using transparency.

If you choose not to use any kind of photo editing or fading. Simply do this:

Print out the poem graphic first. Let the ink dry then reinsert the same paper with the poem on it and print the rose graphic on the same paper that already has the poem. Let the ink dry and now you are ready to use your magic touch.. (wink!). Hope this helps. If you have any other questions then do let me know and I will try my best to answer. Thanks again!

  47. Oh my goodness, your vase is just gorgeous! I got here from the wonderful graphicsfairy site and I can't wait to try the project on my small metal buckets (vases). I was going to ask you about the transparency of the rose pic but then you have so kindly answered all the questions in the comments section. I am SO GLAD I found your site, will be a regular here. Thanks so much for sharing your tips so generously. Despite being computer savvy, I didn't think of overlapping images and using MS Word's transparency feature to do what you did! Bravo to your talents!

  50. Poppy... this is the most amazing chair!! If I was your neighbour it would be disappearing over the fence ;) have you thought about distressing it a little with sand paper? I love the distressed effect and I've been trying to replicate it on a new stool that was made for me but nothing seems to work as well as time! Might have to tie it to the back of the car and drive it round town :)
